2018 has been a good year for RPG fans and there almost wasn’t enough time to truly enjoy them all. From watching Assassin’s Creed grow up and become a fully fledged RPG to how Monster Hunter World pleased veterans and newcomers alike to the sprawling pen and paper styled CRPG Pillars of Eternity 2.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
When I think back on RPGs of this year, Deadfire always pops up. It moved the story along in an interesting way while offering a hop on point to new players. Depowered and left for dead, you chase after a colossal statue with the spirit of a god inside of it, as it moves around the islands of Deadfire. Get ready to explore new islands, make friends and enemies and get involved in the politics of a proud but occupied people who are tired of the various trading companies siphoning wealth and cultural treasures away from their land. It is a complex, rich game full of adventure and interesting characters, just waiting to be explored.
Runner-Up: Monster Hunter World
Honourable Mentions: Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Octopath Traveler
