Storytelling, along with gameplay has become some of the biggest factors when it comes to video games. Games are often criticized for getting the story wrong, or not having a good enough narrative, and sometimes studios simply just nail it. We had a few incredible stories told to us this year, each with their own unique style and pacing, each telling a different story but telling it perfectly. It was not easy to pick a winner, as all these games deserve the recognition for their great narrative, but in the end, there could only be one:
God of War
The God of War series might be known for the excessive, over the top violence, but it’s always had a decent story to it. With the soft reboot that is God of War this year, that level of storytelling went to another level. We now see an older Kratos, with the weight of the world on his shoulders, who sets out on a journey with his son that he doesn’t have the best of relationships with. What we end up with is a beautifully told story about a relationship between a father and son, and their journey of reconnecting with each other through the trials and acceptance of each other’s flaws.
God of War is incredibly well told, coupled with incredible game direction, wonderful performances from the entire cast of voice actors and a beautiful setting. The story is absolutely riveting and we cannot wait to see the rest of the tale of Kratos and Atreus through the Nine Realms.
