2018 was finally the year that VR games sprung into life. For months we had been waiting for that killer app to warrant the purchase of a PlayStation VR unit and this year it not only provided one, but a whole bunch of reasons to finally consider that PSVR investment. There were some top contenders, but there is only one game that stole our heart…
Astro Bot Rescue Mission
A VR game is supposed immerse you into a world that you can’t live out in your real world, and Astro Bot Rescue Mission did just that. Your task was to guide the little Bot through tough terrain in what played like a 3D platformer. Astro was assisted by you, represented as a gigantic robot thing that would follow him through each level. Where the game really shines was with the DualShock 4 controller.
You can’t help but think that Sony had envisioned all the ideas many years prior to the game releasing as it took advantage of the controller like no other game before it by using each button, the gyroscope controls and the touch pad – elements that were all crucial to beating the game. The connection between you and Astro Bot was unlike any other. Together you would beat the evil alien that attacked him and save his crew mates, who you would encounter along the journey. VR games have had it in the neck for a long time now, but Astro Bot Rescue Mission is proof that VR has an important role to play in this industry.
Honourable Mention: Beat Saber, Firewall: Zero Hour, The Persistence, Wipeout VR
Please note: We excluded other VR units (such as Oculus and HTC), as no one on the SA Gamer team owns the hardware.
