Slightly Mad Studios, the UK development team behind Need for Speed: Shift, Shift 2: Unleashed and more recently the Project CARS series, has had a rather busy January. Ian Bell, the founder and CEO, has jumped onto Twitter to announce that the Slightly Mad team is going to be producing their very own console in the somewhat near future.
According to Bell:
What is the Mad Box? It’s the most powerful console ever built… It’s literally ‘Mad’… You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS? You want a full engine for free to develop your games on it? You have it.
Just two days ago his Twitter account also gave us the first look at what this new console may look like:

I’m always surprised and a little amazed that anyone is brave enough to enter the home console market and compete with the likes of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo at any time. This is even more the case now, when the giants in the market have all hinted that at least part of the market is shifting towards cloud-based streaming in the not-so-distant future. That being said the Mad Box is making some pretty exciting claims including the ability to displays VR in 90 Hz display per eye with each displaying 90 fps and providing all independent developers with a free, cross-platform engine allowing them to deploy their games on PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Mad Box.
It all sounds a little too perfect, a little hyperbolic and mostly quite mad. But, I kind of think that’s what they’re going for. So let’s give them the benefit of the doubt.
