Did you miss the big Mortal Kombat 11 reveal last night? Don’t fear, We have all the gory details you’re after. Before we get into anything at all, here is a look at your first gameplay trailer:
Ed Boon took to the stage in Los Angeles to explain how you’ll now have to deal with both an offensive and defense meter to aid your fighter in kombat, which you can see represented in the bottom korners (vertical bar for defense and horizontal bar for offense), with the expected Fatal Blow again returning to help you out of a korner if your health is a little low. New to the mekhanics is a flawless block that, if timed well, opens your opponent up to a deadly kombo. We also got to see the fighting roster… well… some of them. These are the fighters we know will appear in Mortal Kombat 11.
- Lui Kang
- Kung Lao
- Sonya Blade
- Shao Khan
A demonstration showed off a fight between Scorpion and Baraka, but it’s the final fatality that had people oooing and aaahing, when Baraka ends up quite literally munching on Scorpion’s brain. They also showed off Skarlet’s fatality that had her bashing a blood shard through Sonya’s head, poked through her eyeball. Yeah, things got hectic. Knowing what everyone really wanted to see, they provided us with this gory fatality show reel:
Where Mortal Kombat has been shining in recent times is with its story mode and things are not about to change any time soon. Ed Boon mentioned that the story takes place after events in MK9 (the reboot), though we think he meant MKX, as it has Raiden torturing Shinnok who we faced off in the last boss battle fight in MKX. What we do know is that things are about to get real interesting, as the kharacter that shows up at the end of the below video can alter time and, according to Ed Boon, fighters will meet their younger versions in the game. Sounds like it’s going to be one big konfusing timeline. Here is the prologue of the final game:
Ed Boon also touched on the improved kustomisation. You’ll get to kustomise gear, kosmetics, abilities and AI behaviour that include the augments you might have become accustomed to in Injustice 2. Expect to see many versions of your favourite Mortal Kombat kombatants to appear online when the game launches. Furthermore they finally showed off the Kollector’s Edition, which includes a 1:1 scale of Scorpion’s mask, a steel case and a Mortal Kombat emblem magnet.
The show was short but sweet(ish), they dropped just enough information to keep it interesting without dragging things out for too long. They left the footage of the newcomer, Geras, for last. He is a powerful and loyal servant of Kronika with the power to kontrol time. With the hint of time manipulation from Ed Boon, it seems he’s going to play a very big role in this next outing..
Mortal Kombat 11 launches on 23 April for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One. A pre-order will gain you access to the closed beta and Shao Khan as a playable kharacter.
