What happened at Visceral Games will forever remain a tragedy in our industry. EA are renowned for pulling the plug out from a studio when it doesn’t maintain the sales numbers they desire. In 2017 EA brought an end to the much beloved studio, which left most of the developers without a job. Two years later and it looks like there is a shining light in the distance.
Take-Two Interactive announced that the chief operating officer and director of that popular series, Michael Condrey, services has been acquired and will start up a brand new studio under the 2K label as President. Condrey was also the co-founder of Sledgehammer Games and had a big part to play in several Call of Duty games. To say that he comes with impressive credentials is an understatement. One thing is for sure, he obviously knows how to create a team from scratch and we have a feeling he’ll be calling on many of his previous members that worked alongside him in the past.
2K, as you might imagine, is just as excited to see him join their portfolio and David Ismailer, President at 2K, had the following to say:
At 2K, we offer our collective audience a variety of engaging and captivating entertainment experiences. We continually seek opportunities to empower and invest in the right people and ideas. Michael’s unparalleled creative, production and leadership accolades are well-documented and deserved. We are greatly inspired not only by his passion but the potential for his new studio to complement our existing portfolio and development expertise. We welcome Michael to the 2K family and look forward to seeing our new Silicon Valley studio flourish in the months and years to come.
Condrey expressed his gratitude.
Great games come from the passion of a team driven by the pursuit of quality and the empowerment of an independent studio model. 2K’s studios have creative and technical autonomy, backed by a world-class infrastructure of support, and that offers the perfect recipe to build a new studio and craft experiences that will lead the next generation of gaming for fans everywhere. David and the dedicated people at 2K and Take-Two have an extensive history of rich and established brands, as well as a long tenure of executive leadership committed to supporting the ambitions of their independent studio teams.
Today’s announcement represents a rare and special opportunity for developers to help build and shape a new Silicon Valley studio from the ground up I couldn’t be more excited, or thankful, to embark on this next step in my career.
It’s highly likely that whatever they will be working on will be for the next generation. It’s good to see so much excitement and passion from both parties. Let’s hope something spectacular comes from this.
