The Division 2 will be removed from storefronts following launch

The PC ecosystem is in a weird place right now. We’ve grown so used to Steam being the premier place for you to get your games, but many other companies have crept up to challenge Steam’s supposed monopoly. The biggest of which is the Epic Games Store which has been a thorn in Steam’s side now by having games be exclusive to the store and removed from the service entirely. But things are getting even more complicated.

The Division 2 is Ubisoft’s latest release and obviously it will be on Ubisoft’s Uplay service. However, game storefronts have been able to sell Uplay keys to customers for years, but it seems that will be coming to an end. The news came to us first from Green Man Gaming that put the following banner on the game’s store page:

This means the game will be removed once it launches. No further info was given, but game retailer Gamesplanet put up a more detailed explanation:

Now this is much more interesting. The game will be pulled after launch and all support further will have to be diverted to Ubisoft instead of the retailer that used to have that power. The most interesting part is, “the game will digitally only be available through Ubisoft’s Store and another exclusive digital store.” They mean the Epic Games Store. Epic struck a deal with Ubisoft and now the game will exclusively be on there. Like Gamesplanet said, “obviously we’re not happy about this decision.”

I respect Epic’s hustle and they are doing good by providing competition, but these exclusivity deals are killing other smaller retailers that just want to provide their customers with support for the games they bought. The thing is, many of the game’s add-ons will not appear on these stores such as the game’s season pass or any extra content. It’ll just be the base game and at launch it will be forcefully removed from all stores.
