Good morning! Those of you that managed to stay awake for the special Super Mario Maker 2 Nintendo Direct were no doubt happy you did. Fans of our favourite Mushroom Kingdom plumber were treated to a presentation which despite only lasting just over a quarter of an hour, was jam-packed with details about the upcoming creation game. Not only did we get confirmation of a bunch of new features, but many of these seemed to be direct responses to fan requests from the original game on the WiiU.
Here are just four of the highlights we picked out and are really looking forward to:
There are so many new features so creating your own level may seem a little daunting at first. So why not learn the ropes by rebuilding Peach’s Castle in a brand new Story Mode with over 100 Nintendo created levels?
A big draw for Mario Maker is the ability to upload your own and play other people’s levels. However, a big drawback from the original game was that discovery was a nightmare. Nintendo though has heard our anguished cries and the Switch sequel will include Tags. So you can avoid those autorun monstrosities if you so desire.
Super Mario 3D World
Designing levels in the style of the original Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros U was a lot of fun in the original. However, in addition to a host of new themes within those worlds (desert sandstorm and slippy snow, yes please!) SMM 2 includes the oft-requested Super Mario 3D World with a host of awesome looking features unique to this style.
Co-op creation and Multiplayer Co-op and Versus modes
Not only will you be able to create new levels with friends, most excitingly new online multiplayer modes will have you taking on Boss levels in co-op and even taking on all comers in tough levels in a first-to-finish mode that looks like a heck of a lot of fun.
If you have fifteen minutes to spare it is really worth the watch (we’ve included a link to the video below).
At first, I was a bit sceptical (despite quite enjoying the first Mario Maker) that SMM 2 would really be my game. However, after watching the Direct I am happy to see all the changes Nintendo has implemented, and all the new features (especially the four mentioned above) have got me really excited to try out the game when it is released on the 28th of June 2019.
