Naughty Dog published a blog post recently that details the termination of most of their multiplayer titles on PS3. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, The Last of Us, and The Last of Us Left Behind are all quietly going to go into that good night on the 3rd of September 2019. All online servers for the games in question will be shut down. As a token of appreciation, Naughty Dog has made all multiplayer DLC for these games completely free until the server shut down date.
This isn’t a grave loss or anything, we’re going to start seeing these older games get their servers shut down more and more as we head into the future. Sometimes there’s just like 3 people still playing your game on the older generation hardware and the server costs are not feasible anymore. Naughty Dog’s Scott Lowe had some final words:
It’s bittersweet to say the least. Uncharted and The Last of Us multiplayer on the PS3 are defining entries in Naughty Dog’s history and we’ve been honored to support the passionate communities that have grown around them for almost a decade. We have so many fond memories from playing alongside you throughout the years.
And closing off with:
Thank you to everyone who has played Uncharted and The Last of Us multiplayer on PS3 and for all of your incredible enthusiasm, feedback, and support.
Thankfully we still have the PS4 versions to go to if we’re looking for Naughty Dog flavoured multiplayer. The studio’s multiplayer offerings often get eclipsed by their strong single-player stories, but they’re also brilliant. I’m honestly sad I missed the window where a lot of people were playing that multiplayer because it was just so much fun and so cool to be a part of. The games won’t be affected much with their multiplayer modes stripped out, but still, some important pieces of gaming history will soon be gone.
