15 minutes before the show started, the stream had songs from various Final Fantasy games playing to keep everyone awake who got up for a 3 am show. If you didn’t we have the best bits right here. The show was pretty great, except for randomly showing games that are already available and have been for quite a while for some reason. Get ready for a wild ride!
Final Fantasy 7 Remake (March 2020)
We see Aeris in the alley, and a train arriving. It is the beginning of Final Fantasy VII in remade glory. Well, until the train stops and spiky ass jumps off.
Yoshinori Kitase, the producer of Final Fantasy VII R, arrives on stage to talk about going back to the game 22 years later. He thanks long-time fans for their patience and support. “Remaking FF7 has allowed us to dive even deeper into the stories and characters.”
He also says there are two Blu-Ray discs worth of content. The game expands on the story of Midgard, with the first episode being “almost a game in its own right”.
“We will not disappoint your expectations. Your reunion is near. To newcomers: we present a new Final Fantasy VII and a perfect place to start off.”
Neel Pabon, senior manager of product marketing comes on stage to talk about the game. He details the hybrid system of real-time attacks and strategic commands. Land standard attacks to fill the ATB gauge. Activate tactical mode and time freezes, letting you input commands and spend that ATB.
Materia can be seen in Cloud’s sword in a close-up shot. Barret can attack at range, allowing him to hit hard to reach targets. A single button press to move through other characters. Characters fight when not in use, but you must use their ATB bars yourself. You can stagger enemies like in FF13. The developers want you to enjoy the battle and also have time to focus and think strategically. Abilities can also be put on shortcut keys to keep the action moving along without pauses
Barret and Cloud fight the Scorpion Sentinel. They need to overload the enemy with lightning. It moves to far range and only Barret can attack. Characters have a lot of back and forth banter during the fight. The fight takes place on multiple platforms, with the sentinel moving around and charging up weapons. Cloud and Barret hide behind debris as the laser tail is up. Enemy has multiple hitboxes near the end as they work to finish it off. Barret’s limit break looks great, as does Cloud’s Cross-Slash, which finishes the fight.
Director Tetsuya Nomura asks if anyone wants to actually play the game, saying that the game is playable at the E3 booth (insert crocodile tears). They also wanted to show a longer version of the trailer shown at the Final Fantasy Concert which is currently in LA. We see Aeris outside of Loveless, looking up at Midgar HQ. Cloud arrives, riding on a motorbike. They also show you walking around on the train, fighting and Aeris asking for Cloud’s help. And we finally see Tifa, (woo!) as well as 7th Heaven. Everyone’s fighting looks really smooth, with Tifa doing uppercuts and lots of roundhouse kicks and a fight with Airbuster on the bridge. We also see Sephiroth before the trailer ends.
Life is Strange 2
Life is Strange 2 is shown with… streamer reactions and review site review quotes? Yeah okay.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered
Miasma has blanketed the world, but the crystals protect where people live. Sadly the crystals are getting weaker and it is up to heroes to help them. Crystal Chronicles is coming to mobile. Online multiplayer mode and the game is on PS4, Switch and smartphone so you can party up instead of working or during a commute.
I was really confused by this one until it says right at the end that you can play the game on Steam. So if you missed it, you can play it on PC now.
The Last Remnant Remastered (Available now!)
What would you sacrifice for power? The Last Remnant Remastered is Available now on Switch. If you want to know more, here is 10 minutes on it that wasn’t shown at the show.
Dragon Quest Builders 2 (July 12)
Uh-oh. Cooking, creation and building has been outlawed. As a lucky escapee from prison, you must build, fight, explore and become a master builder. Everything is bigger, with more variety. Keep your wits around you as you go to mines, explore underwater and delve in ruins. Take on bosses but don’t forget to farm and harvest. Invite your friends to build a big dong or a nice house in the middle of your world. It all depends on what friends you have.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age (Fall)
A top-down racer called Circuit Superstars. It will release in 2020 and is part of the Square Enix Collective. Tries to capture the old style of top-down racers, but with physics and other modern racing features.
Another game that has already released, Battalion 1944 lets you take down enemies like it is the 40s again. The game promises to have seasonal content updates, like challenges for new cosmetics for your guns. Because nothing screams 1944 realism like a blinged out Mosin-Nagant.
Square Enix Music streaming
Get streaming. You might remember we wrote last week about listening to everything Final Fantasy on Spotify. Tune your ears into some of the best music and have a better day.
Kingdom Hearts III Re: Mind
I am just going to say that if you didn’t finish Kingdom Hearts III yet, do NOT WATCH THIS TRAILER. Because spoilers await. If you have watch and enjoy.
Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers (July 2)
Naoki Yoshida (Producer and director) arrived on stage to talk about FF14‘s next expansion, Shadowbringers which releases on July 2. The game is at its highest ever active player count (Until FF7R launches, he jokes). Yoshida says Shadowbringers isn’t just an expansion pack, but has as much content as a stand-alone game. New elements include two new jobs: Gunbreaker and Dancer, and two new races the hrothgar and viera. They showed off the launch trailer for Shadowbringers. If you haven’t been playing the game there is a lot going on that makes it pretty hard to follow.
Heroes will need to harness dark and light to fight the Sineaters. Oh and the gods are actually the oldest primals. Woah.
Dying Light 2 (Spring 2020)
We are running through a city, enemies everywhere. New traversal mechanics help you get out of harm’s way and solve new vertical puzzles. A different trailer is shown than the one above, which ends with a release date. 2020 is looking wild. For more, here is an in-depth look with lead designer Tymon Smektala.
Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Scarlet Grace Ambitions (Coming soon)
Two games head West for the first time, giving JRPG fans more old-school grinding and tactical battles. Romancing SaGa has been often requested here in the West and finally, we will have a chance to explore a whole new JRPG franchise.
War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius
New game from the FFBE universe called War of the Visions. More adventures in the world of Lapis, away from the gacha game that some of us have been playing on our phones. Warring kingdoms, each represented by an animal, end up clashing. Fighting looks like FF Tactics style. Another game to drain your smartphone battery. There is no mention of whether it will also have us doing pulls and hoping for good units or not.
Outriders (Summer 2020)
From People Can Fly, we finally see more about Outriders, a sci-fi game where humanity is in an exodus from Earth. The trailer is scant on details but there is a fight with a massive alien before we got a more in-depth look
Bartosz Kmita, the creative director, discusses wanting to make the game for a long time. It is a dark shooter. He says the game has a strong story to enjoy with friends or on your own.
Some cool weapons are shown, as well as more alien enemies. Game is 1,2 or 3-player co-op game. Search Enoch for a mysterious signal. You can watch the video of Kmita discussing the game and see those guns and aliens for yourself below.
More on Outriders this winter.
Oninaki (August 22)
Oninaki is set in a world that is based on reincarnation. The dead can stray due to grief, so don’t grieve for your loved ones when they die or you could break the cycle. Watchers are tasked with finding lost spirits, sending them onwards in the cycle. It is a hack-and-slash action-adventure game with you playing as one of the watchers.
Final Fantasy VIII Remastered (2019)
They certainly kept us waiting for this one, making us feel like we were talking to a brick wall. Thankfully the skulking like a teenager can end because soon we will be playing Final Fantasy VIII again, with improved text and spell effects, get ready to draw spells out, equip Guardian Forces and sing Eyes on Me like it is 1998 again.
Marvel’s Avengers (May 15, 2020)
Crystal Dynamics is finally showing some gameplay. We see Iron Man flying with Thor, fighting enemies on the Golden Gate Bridge Enemies have pulsar tech, which bothers Tony. The Shield Helicarrier is attacked while most of the Avengers deal with the issues on the bridge. Character modes look great, and the third-person action looks amazing. The Helicarrier explodes when enemies try to steal the experimental tech powering the ship. Five years later a new threat emerges and despite being pariahs to society, the Avengers must fight to save Earth. Shows Hulk vs Abomination and Tony in his Starseeker armour in space.
This is a single-player and co-op game. Heroes shown include Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Iron Man. Voice cast includes: Troy Baker (Bruce Banner), Nolan North (Iron Man), Laura Bailey (Black Widow), Jeff Shine (Captain America) and Travis Willingham (Thor). What a star-studded cast. A teaser shows Hank Pym shrinking a massive robot, so he will probably be the next hero added to the cast.
Scot Amos, head of studio and Meagan Marie (community manager) come on stage to discuss the game. Assemble online in group of up to four. They mention a roster of heroes. Every new superhero and region will be introduced at no additional cost. No pay-to-win, no loot boxes.
And that was Square Enix!
