It’s hard to believe we’re almost halfway through the year but here we are. We’re in the middle of winter, the dust of E3 has settled and we’re a long way off from the broken New Year’s resolutions.
Traditionally, the first half of any year has been quiet compared to what we expect in the latter part, but that has gradually changed as more and more games are released each year, and publisher and developers are vying for our attention in a very limited time and competitive market. The number of games releasing annually is staggering, and just looking at the silly season of 2019, and what we can expect in the first few months of next year, we know it’s going to be impossible to keep up.
When we get to the end of the year though, we tend to start making some lists and start thinking about our personal Game of the Year as websites and award shows start showering great games with praise and affection. Often though video games released in the first two quarters of the year are overlooked, as the games we played more recently tend to be fresh in our memory. Thankfully last year’s God of War did not suffer this fate, but it happens often enough.
So with that in mind, what was your favourite game of 2019 so far? I’m not asking what the Game of the Year is, as that will be a bit premature and we can still expect a ton of excellent games coming out this year, but rather which game/s you enjoyed the most. I’ll start:
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
It comes as no surprise really that my personal favourite game this year is From Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Few games have gripped me so hard and refused to let me go as it tortured me into a sleep-deprived gibbering mess as much as this game. The excellent story, hard as nails but utterly rewarding gameplay is on point and an absolute must-play experience for anyone that likes a challenge.
As a bonus, I will mention Resident Evil 2 Remake, which is a close second for me.
There are some great games released in 2019 such as Mortal Kombat 11, Blood & Truth, Anno 1800, The Division 2, Devil May Cry 5, DiRT Rally 2.0, Metro Exodus, Far Cry New Dawn, Days Gone, Yoshi’s Crafted World and Ace Combat 7 to name but a few. There’s also a lot of variety here, and while you might not like some game, others might love it, so seriously, what has been your favourite game of 2019 so far?
