It might be hard for you to believe, but it’s now already two years since SEGA launched Sonic Mania to bring the popular blue hedgehog back from the dead. It’s thanks to the talents of Christian Whitehead and Headcannon that Sonic reminded us all of just how spectacular those original Mega Drive games were.
Game Informer met with Takashi Iizuka while attending E3 and when asked about the future of Sonic games he got this answer:
2017 was a big year for Sonic. The next big year for Sonic is 2021. That’s the 30-year anniversary for Sonic. We are now preparing.
We all know that Sonic Forces was a decent take on Sonic’s three-dimensional form, but it’s not the reason SEGA had a good year in 2017 for Sonic. Sonic Mania is the reason for all the love and we’re thinking he might be teasing the fact that they are working with Christian Whitehead again on Sonic Mania 2.
It’s still a long way off and while we wait we’ll also have a revised Sonic movie launching, so there’s more than enough for Sonic fans to be excited about.
