Yakuza 7 is going full-blown JRPG

It appears there was a bit more to Yakuza’s April Fool’s joke where it showed a gif that looked like a full-blown menu-driven fight in Yakuza. It received a pretty warm reception, with some (read: me) saying it was cruel to make something so cool be a joke. Turns out it was more of a hint or a litmus test for the idea.

Yakuza 7, or at least that is what we think it will be called in the West, was revealed in Japan and the menu-based combat sits front and centre of this game. The developers know that this is a big change, and said that they will change back for later games if it doesn’t carry across properly.

With Yakuza 6: The Song of Life ending the long story of Kazuma Kiryu, we will follow along with Ichiban Kasuga, and the action moves to Yokohama, which has a playable area three times bigger than Kamurocho.

Rya ga Gotoku 7 launches on PS4 in Japan 16 January 2020 and hopefully we will see Yakuza 7 sometime soon after that. The game will be playable at Tokyo Game Show, so expect more information next month.

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
