Three places we want to see get the remake treatment in future FF7R titles

It still feels surreal that Final Fantasy VII is getting such a massive remake. More story, more to do and explore as well as shaking things up a bit, Final Fantasy VII Remake takes the starting city of the game, Midgar and turns it into an entire game by itself. It is ambitious and possibly laced with some madness. It got me to thinking: what other events, storylines and locations would I like to see in that much detail? Here are a few places to look forward to (one day) without just listing every single town and city. (I will try to keep spoilers to a minimum for people who never played this game.)

The Nibelheim flashback

Shortly after leaving Midgar in Final Fantasy VII, you find yourself in a small sleepy town called Kalm. There isn’t much to do or see in the town, but it is the first time the whole crew can sit and talk without Shinra troops breathing down their necks. Cloud fills everyone in on some back story and we see him and Sephiroth in Nibelheim years before. From what we have seen, Sephiroth taunts and plagues Cloud much more (and from earlier on) in FF7R. So with that in mind, the Nibelheim flashback could be a very interesting time. Oh, and if we get to kill dragons and the like with Sephiroth, it’s going to be quite fun. I still hold out hopes that some of the events or characters from Crisis Core might make it into the game and this could be a good place to plant those seeds.

Cosmo Canyon

Cosmo Canyon is a pretty important place on your journey, one that the party nearly rushes past until their buggy. Cosmo Canyon was the birthplace of both AVALANCHE as well as Red XIII. It is a site of pilgrimage, a counterpoint to the massive, messy sprawl of Midgar. Players learn a lot about the truth of what Shinra is up to and why AVALANCHE is important here, and Red XIII has to deal with a very harsh truth. It is a pretty important section of the game, providing character moments as well as motivation to continue your fight. With it being so important, I expect some effort and time will be put into this part of the game so that the things we learn here hit home properly.

Cloud Subconscious

This dream world is just begging for more content and time inside of it. This is probably one of the most important moments for Cloud’s development through the story, and players learn a lot of information here. Cloud has retreated into his mind and is trying to find himself, kernels of truth that have been hidden away between the shock and trauma of his life, as well as the massive strain the Jenova Project and Sephiroth have placed on him both physically and mentally. This mindscape is full of revelations and could be fleshed out to tell more, or to show the myriad pieces of Cloud’s psyche even better. A lot happens here and just imagining the orchestral versions of Who Am I transitioning into the Main Theme of Final Fantasy VII as you uncover the truth is just making me want to go play FF7 again.

Those three areas make me look forward to whatever the second (or third) volume in the remake are called, though who knows how far away they are. Though with the game changing so much to have that much content in Midgar, who knows if the other places in the world will still be visited in order or at all?

Is there a specific place or moment you are looking forward to? You know, besides all those great minigames.

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
