This year, we saw some truly amazing adventure games, all filled to the brim with action. It is one of the most popular genres in video games simply because it combines almost everything else to create a complete experience.
The genre is so varied, with so many takes on action and adventure, that we at SA Gamer decided to split the category into two, one focusing more on the action, and the other more on the adventure.
Action: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was a bit of a departure of the RPG nature of From Software’s previous outings with a lot more focus on the combat, traversal and even the story. The gameplay is out of this world, utilising the tough but fair approach to give us the tightest and best controls and combat experienced in such a game in a long time. The game is brutally challenging, but also so so satisfying and rewarding.
Runner-up: Resident Evil 2
Honourable mention: Devil May Cry 5
Adventure: Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
For some reason Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was first shown with a heavy focus on the combat. Then it came out that it was a full-blown Metroidvania game with lightsabers and a cute as a button droid and you can’t help but fall in love. Even Cal Kestis, who at first glance looks like the most boring character possible, grows on you as you learn his tragic backstory and slowly peel back what makes him tick all while getting new gadgets and Force powers to help you navigate the planets you visit.
