A favourite genre amongst many of our readers, it’s probably accurate to say that 2019 was not a very big year for platforming fans. Unlike last year where we had some fantastic remakes/remasters as well as several Indie darlings that really stole the show, this year’s selection was substantially thinner. That being said, the 2019 winner is a worthy title; A masterpiece combining some 30+ years of platforming excellence in a simply fantastic package.
Super Mario Maker 2
SMM2 is a special game. Sure it’s not just a platformer. It actually goes beyond that – first and foremost as a fun and creative platforming level design tool. However, despite all that, it still has a substantial single-player experience highlighting the best of Mario-platforming from several decades. Plus, online there’s a source of endless Mario levels and a truly special multiplayer component that’ll keep you coming back to the game again and again. Whether you’re a platforming player, a platform creator or somewhere in between; Whether you’re looking for something to relax to or something that will get those competitive juices flowing, I’m pretty confident you’ll find something to love and if that’s not a reason to give it this year’s award, I’m not sure what is.
