2016’s Ratchet & Clank was a rather pleasant surprise that brought the legendary franchise into the modern-day and received acclaim from fans and critics alike. It proved that the world is still ready for more Ratchet & Clank and the possibility of a sequel is relatively high. With Sony recently acquiring Insomniac Games and making them a part of their first-party studios, it’s clear that the chances of this coming to pass is relatively high even if the studio is no doubt also working on a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Former games journalist Colin Moriarty has the following to say during his podcast, Sacred Symbols, about the possibility of a potential sequel:
We’re going to get a Ratchet & Clank in-between [Marvel’s Spider-Man and its sequel] on PlayStation 5. I feel like that’s going to be a launch game, the game that’s long been in development at Insomniac.
It’s a pretty small rumour at this point, but it does make complete sense. Besides Spider-Man, Ratchet & Clank is Insomniac Games’ most recognisable franchise and the reboot launched way back in 2016 which means there has been a lot of time to develop some kind of sequel that will coincide with the release of the PS5. It would be a killer launch title if it’s true and would bring the legendary franchise to the forefront of the next generation.
We’ll have to wait and see if the rumour holds any weight, but I’m sure as soon as Sony finally announces the PS5 that the game will be shown off alongside it. Insomniac Games are definitely capable and with Sony’s full support behind them, hope remains high that the franchise will live on.
