Anthem was as close to a disaster as a big AAA game gets. Garth reviewed it back in February last year. He was disappointed with the “occasional lacklustre writing, the lack of quest variation, the long, frequent load times and how higher difficulties were only variations on +damage and +HP and how relics were just enemy spawns”. In short, it was not very good.
Back in November, we brought you that the news that according to a report in Kotaku, Anthem was going to receive a big update. And it seems the sources were right. Yesterday, in a blog post, BioWare General Manager Casey Hudson confirmed the ‘major overhaul’. For those interested the full post is worth read – but here is a quote that summarises the post quite well:
Over the coming months we will be focusing on a longer-term redesign of the experience, specifically working to reinvent the core gameplay loop with clear goals, motivating challenges and progression with meaningful rewards – while preserving the fun of flying and fighting in a vast science-fantasy setting.BioWare General Manager Casey Hudson
It will be interesting to see if the major upgrade finally gets the game to the heights fans were hoping it would reach. And only time will tell – but if No Man’s Sky is a possible comparison then at least we know that such big scale change can lead to positive results.
