Overwatch is getting a highly experimental mode starting today if everything goes according to schedule.
Game director Jeff Kaplan revealed that the experimental card is on its way, barring any last-minute problems. The new system will allow players to dive into new and strange ideas to provide feedback and stats on what works and what doesn’t really stick, similar to what PTR players do. However, unlike the PTR, this isn’t about bug testing, but about trying out gameplay changes to see how things play out.
The first big experimental mode is called Triple Damage. In this mode, you will not, in fact, be doing three times the damage as usual, but instead, three people in your team of six will be playing the damage role. This 3-2-1 style is a test to see what difference it would make to queue times for queueing to play as damage, as many using the role queue system are left with long wait times for a match currently.
“It was very controversial on the development team. We have very strong reactions for and against this system, and ultimately at around the same time we had also mentioned to you that were going to do this experimental card… and so many players said, ‘Why don’t you let us try it?’ So this is your chance.”
This will also let players see what happens when an off tank like Roadhog or D.Va is suddenly the only tank for a whole team, and how character balance would have to be shifted.
Playing the experimental card still counts towards special events and your account level, so you aren’t missing out on anything by giving it a whirl.
Also, if anyone wants to count how many times Kaplan says “Don’t panic” or a variation thereof, that would be great.
