This month marks the five year anniversary of the death of much-beloved Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata. It’s not often that a so-called ‘business figure’ strikes such an emotional chord with so many in the general population. However, Iwata will long be remembered not only as the friendly face of Nintendo, and one of the men that truly influenced the video game industry in a positive way but also as a creative and empathic leader.
There are many stories that surround the man, however, one that had the most impact on me – was how after issues with initial 3DS sales and then again after the commercial failure of the Wii U, the Nintendo President chose to slash his own salary (by 50% according to some sources) rather than fire any employees. Not only was (and still is) such a selfless executive act extremely rare (especially these days) – considering that he then led Nintendo’s remarkable recovery with the development of the Switch tells you a lot about him as a leader.
The Japanese book Iwata-San provided an in-depth look at the “president, game developer, and gamer who forever changed the video game industry” and according to a tweet posted over the weekend by Viz Media it will be getting an English edition entitled: Ask Iwata: Words of Wisdom from Nintendo’s Legendary CEO next year. No doubt like many of you out there, I will be rather excited to remember and get an even deeper look at the figure that had so much to do with so many of the games I have loved over the years.
In the meantime, if you would like to know about him check out this Did You Know Gaming tribute video to Mr Iwata.
