Yesterday afternoon, PlayStation Europe sent out a tweet that the next State of Play Live Stream will be held this Thursday at 21:00 BST or 10 pm time for us Saffers. They did, however, make it very clear that the focus will be squarely PS4 and PSVR, and no further update regarding the PlayStation 5 should be expected.
State of Play returns Thursday at 9pm BST / 10pm CEST.
What to expect:
⚫ A focus on upcoming PS4 & PS VR games
⚫ A few quick check-ins on third-party and indie games from June’s PS5 showcase
⚫ No big PS5 announcements!
— PlayStation Europe (@PlayStationEU) August 3, 2020
This was elaborated on over on the PS Blog, stating that no 1st party PlayStation games will be featured and that they are intending to show what we can expect on PS4 going forward:
And just to be super clear — there will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode. There won’t be any updates around hardware, business, preorders, or dates either. On Thursday, our focus is squarely on showcasing some cool upcoming games coming to the broader PlayStation ecosystem.
It does make sense, Sony has a massive install base with PlayStation 4, and not everyone will be able to upgrade straight off the bat simply because of cost, so for them to continue supporting the console, which there is nothing wrong with makes a helluva lot of business sense.
It’s also quite clear that they’re learning from mistakes made by their peers, and being as transparent as possible, letting people know exactly what to expect. Obviously, there are people that are upset that we’re not getting an update on the PS5, and that we still don’t know what it’s going to cost, but we do live in unprecedented times, and it is also very clear that both Sony, and Microsoft are playing their cards very close to their chests.
