You can pre-load Horizon Zero Dawn on Steam, but there are a few issues to iron out

I have been playing Horizon Zero Dawn again, this time on PC, and honestly I am loving it. Using a mouse to aim just feels more natural to me, so I pull off headshots and hit weakpoints in a way that makes me feel like I’m a master hunter. However, the preview build had quite a few hiccups in it, meaning I have held off on review while waiting for a fix.

A large patch dropped yesterday, but there are still a few issues that remain. Guerrilla has mentioned some of the issues that they are aware of, and that they are working on.

  • Anisotropic Filtering settings are not working. This is a high priority issue for us to resolve.
  • Some systems may experience a brief stutter during general world traversal, UI updates, quest updates, or camera swaps in cutscenes. This is a high priority issue for us to investigate.
  • Some animations are designed to only refresh at 30fps even if the game is running at a much higher frame rate. We are exploring how we can improve this with a future update.

The game looks absolutely amazing, and that brief stutter has completely ruined a few cutscenes for me as frame rates dropped to a crawl in the opening sections. It has been better since, but every now and then my running around would come to an abrupt halt as the game crashed. Hopefully with the latest update I will see less of this, so I can give a review of the release version of the game.

If you do get Horizon Zero Dawn for PC, make sure to set the game to run before going off to make coffee. On first run, and then every time you change your GPU drivers, the game needs to compile its shaders, which can take between 10 and 15 minutes.

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
