We got our first proper commercial for the PS5 yesterday. The video runs for just over a minute and is entitled: PlayStation 5 – Play Has No Limits. You can check it out below, but you’ll quickly notice that you don’t actually see much of the new console itself. In fact, you’ll have to wait until the last 10 seconds to even see Sony’s futuristic bright white platform that will be the home of their gaming future. You don’t even get a look at any games. So what’s it all about?
Well, Sony has a bit of a problem. Some of the new tech that they talk about is really hard to demonstrate unless you’re actually physically playing the console. Sure, intellectually we may vaguely understand what Haptic Feedback, Adaptive Triggers and 3D Audio mean. However, it’s kind of something you wanna try before you can actually tell what it ‘sounds’ and ‘feels’ like. And it’s this that PlayStation tries to exemplify using a dramatisation of a woman traversing a fantastical world. I watched the video using earphones and I thought they actually showed off the 3D Audio really well. The sound design did do a reasonable job in helping me understand how the Adaptive Triggers and Haptic Feedback on the new DuelSense will work – especially when she pulls back on the bow in one of the final scenes and the sound stretches to match. Almost, anyway.
And that’s the challenge. I really think the DualSense promises a lot. It sure sounds like it will be uniquely tactile and engaging. However, with the Xbox controller being full backwards compatible – the DualSense really needs to impress and there’s always a chance that it is more of a gimmick than a useful feature. And until we actually get our hands on the system – this is always going to be something that’s a little hard to fully grasp.
