The jump to the next-gen is going to have a few speedbumps, and the method 505 Games has picked for getting the full next-gen experience with Control by buying the Control Ultimate Edition is one of them. Worse yet, the publisher took a page to explain it and… somehow didn’t explain anything at all.
505 Games’ statement starts: “Every avenue we pursued, there was some form of blocker and those blockers meant that at least one group of players ended up being left out of the upgrade for various reasons. As of today, we can’t offer an upgrade to everyone, and leaving any one group out feels unfair. We understand that is not what you want to hear.”
While many publishers are leaning into free upgrades for next-gen, there are a few that are opting for a separate sale, or something that costs more. For Control, players will have to buy a separate version of the game to take full advantage of next-gen consoles, regardless of whether you already own Control and its Season Pass already.
Players that don’t buy the ultimate edition will still get “an enhanced experience” through backwards compatibility.
The full explanation Q&A is here. Maybe it is some sort of Altered Item that only a specific set of people can read.
