Opinion: I played Kingdom Hearts on almost everything, now a good mobile console comes along and we are done?

Dear Square Enix, we need to talk for a minute. Recently Tetsuya Nomura said that there are currently no plans for more Kingdom Hearts games on the Nintendo Switch, and my brain is unable to parse this information.

You see, I started this journey back where it all began, as it launched for PlayStation 2, many many years ago. It was one hell of a journey, meeting characters from my Final Fantasy favourites along with a whole bunch of Disney characters. Travelling with Sora was a great time, and each FF cameo fired my imagination. Was this an alternate reality? Was this what the character saw before or after their respective game? Would anyone believe them if they told a story of being stuck somewhere and a talking duck that was also a mage had helped them out?

Following along wasn’t easy back then, when internet access was still a premium. So you would just try play as many of the games as possible, following along across multiple platforms to fit the story pieces together. I remember the crushing moment that I discovered the next game was on Game Boy Advance, a platform I didn’t own, so I had to skip that one. Still, I tried to pay attention to all the various journal entries and the like to piece things together later. Do you know how I followed along? I had the mobile phone game, played on Nintendo DS, 3DS, PSP, PS3 and eventually PS4. Now, finally, there is a Kingdom Hearts game for Switch on the way and I can’t wait to see how the console is used to bring more story to life…

Except you aren’t going to, apparently. In an interview with Nintendo Enthusiast, creator Tetsuya Nomura said there are currently no plans to bring more Kingdom Hearts games to the Switch. Now sure, that could be guarded talk, not wanting to reveal that there is another game in the works that hasn’t been announced or the like. But it seems to include the chance of ports of previous games too.

So Melody of Memory might be the only Kingdom Hearts game on the horizon for the Switch. Which is rather baffling. Why head to a platform for a single game? It is a strange move, and I say this fully aware of Kingdom Hearts 3 requiring players to have knowledge of every spin-off title, even the discontinued ones…

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
