New art and story details about Final Fantasy 16 are delicious

Final Fantasy XVI, the next big JRPG to get excited about, hasn’t revealed too much yet, beyond what people have been able to glean from the teaser trailer. Not the official website is starting to add art and story information about the game and it seems pretty great.

Set in a land called Valisthea, this place has mountains of glittering crystals called Mothercrystals. These colossal formations have allowed realms to thrive, blessing the land with protection. This isn’t exactly a new premise, as Final Fantasy has almost always had nations with crystals that provide some form of protection or bounty.

“Countless wars have been fought over the Mothercrystals all around the land, leading to the rise of nations such as the Grand Duchy of Rosaria, the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, the Kingdom of Waloed, the Dhalmekian Republic, and the Iron Kingdom, each with their own culture and ideology.”

Some people are blessed with the powers of the Eikons, Final Fantasy’s massive summons. This can either be as a Blessing or as a Dominant. Being blessed allows access to a portion of an Eikon’s power, while a Dominant has the might of an Eikon within them, and they transform into these mighty creatures of legend to protect the nation.

The main character, Clive Roshford, has the Blessing of Phoenix, given to him by his younger brother Joshua who is a Dominant.

“The two brothers find a confidant in Jill Warrick, who was raised alongside them. At an early age, Jill was taken from her homeland in the Northern Territories—a nation that swore loyalty to the Grand Duchy of Rosaria—to become a ward of the duchy, securing peace between the two realms. She spends her childhood years with Clive and Joshua as a member of the Rosfield household.”

While there has been war before over resources and the Mothercrystals, a Blight has descended, causing nations to look at their neighbours with hungry eyes.

The art and information on the new website is quite stunning, and the more I see, the more I want to dive headlong into this new game and drink deep.

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
