2020 may have been a weird and difficult year, but it was still pretty great for gamers who enjoy a good story. Amazing narratives are a big part of why I personally play video games, and I’ve come to realise that people who dismiss games as childish wastes of time have never had the chance to experience a high-quality story-driven game. With the likes of Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Hades, Spiritfarer, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us 2 releasing this year, Best Narrative was a very difficult category to choose a winner for. But we eventually went with…
The Last of Us 2
In true Naughty Dog fashion, playing The Last of Us 2 is like playing through a movie. A grim, brutal movie where nothing is black and white, and nobody is really a hero. Expertly told from the perspective of two opposing characters against the backdrop of a dangerous world filled with monsters – both human and zombie – TLOU2 delivers an outstanding experience that few other games could ever hope to match. The fact that both playable characters are women, and one of them does not fit into the stereotypical ‘video game girl’ body type box at all, is just icing on the cake.
Runner-up: Ghost of Tsushima
Honourable mentions: Spiritfarer, Hades, Final Fantasy 7 Remake
