SA Gamer Awards 2020: Best Soundtrack

I listen to video game soundtracks a lot. They tend to be low on vocals and high energy, which make them perfect to read and write to. A good game soundtrack will take you right back to the moment where that track played in the game, or have you relive some of the emotions you felt at that time. Sometimes these soundtracks are so good, you listen to soundtracks from games you haven’t even played yet. Just be careful with the track names, they tend to be spoilery. 2020 had a whole bunch of great soundtracks to listen to and get you in the mood for more gaming, but there was one that stood out for us.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake’s soundtrack is a tour de force of Final Fantasy. If the absolute quantity of music doesn’t astound you, the quality of the various tracks will take your breath away. Whether it is updating the original songs, or spicing them up to work as boss fight crescendos, weaving motifs and themes to punch you later with sadness or high energy, this massive collection of music meant that every boss fight, every segment of the game felt deliberate and curated. Just thinking about it makes me want to play the game again right from the start.

Runner-up: Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Honourable mentions: Fall Guys, The Last of Us 2, Hades, Ghost of Tsushima, Persona 5 Royal, Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
