The absolutely amazing Diablo 2 only had the one expansion pack – Lord of Destruction – but there were plans in the works for a second expansion. Diablo creator David Brevik explained on Twitter how it never came to pass.
“I had a multi-page design doc going over new classes, new areas, new mechanics, and story concepts. That’s as far as it got.”
It sounds like the stars never aligned for the unnamed second expansion, with several different reasons leading to it not ever hitting the production phase. For starters, Brevik left a while after making the design doc, and at the time the team was working on their vision of Diablo 3 and another unannounced project.
When asked about this other version of Diablo 3, it sounds like Brevik and Blizzard North were ahead of their time. “[It] would have been very different from any Diablo. I think it was really interesting. We used a lot of the game-structure concepts for Marvel Heroes. [It] was an APRG / MMO. MMO in terms of many people playing at once, not like WoW. It was scrapped because most of [Blizzard North] left.”
The second expansion would have added more to the game’s PVP, and two new classes, one of which was the Cleric. If only we could have seen it in action.
