Back in March, The Wall Street Journal reported that Microsoft was in talks to purchase the messaging app many of us use every day for something in the region of $10+ million. Yes, Microsoft was very interested in purchasing Discord Inc. Then, almost as quickly as it had appeared on our timelines, we got the news that Discord had decided they didn’t want to sell. So it was rather interesting yesterday when a Sony blog post announced that PlayStation had a new partnership with Discord…
Now, this isn’t an outright purchase. In fact, in the blog post, SIE’s President and CEO Jim Ryan describes the transaction as “a minority investment as part of Discord’s Series H round”. So, much smaller in scale than was apparently on the table with Microsoft. But other than that – we don’t get much info as to what the new ‘partnership’ will mean except the following quote from Ryan:
Our goal is to bring the Discord and PlayStation experiences closer together on console and mobile starting early next year, allowing friends, groups, and communities to hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together.Jim Ryan, SIE Blog
So, be sure to keep an eye on your app over the next while to see how/if it will become more ‘Sony-flavoured’.
