Playdate doubles down on its wonderful weirdness

Yesterday, the team behind Firewatch and Untitled Goose Game revealed an in-depth look at their wonderfully weird Playdate. In case you haven’t been following the news around the strange yellow device – the Playdate is basically a two-colour, high contrast, pixelated gaming handheld. Other than those pretty unique features, what really makes it stand out is the odd crank on the side and the fact that purchasing the device will also give you access to a variety of games – which will be delivered to your device weekly when connected to wifi. Sure, it all sounds a bit ‘out there’. But I’m really excited to see someone doing things a little differently.

The video presentation yesterday finally confirmed that the Playdate preorders would go live next month and confirmed that you will be able to create your own games for the device using the free Playdate Pulp web browser app. They also gave us a look at some of the games that will be included in Season One (over a 12 week period) – and even revealed a cool initiative to feature developers from marginalised communities lead by SweetBaby Inc and a new title from Lucas Pope (Return of the Obra Dinn). However, what really caught the eye was how the team is truly embracing the oddness of the device. This is typified with its first accessory: the Playdate Stereo Dock (pictured above). Not only is it a fancy magnetic charger, but it will play music (from the games and from a Poolsuite app) and even double as a pen-holder!?

I kind of love everything about this little device and really hope we can get our hands on one here in South Africa. If you’d like to check out the full presentation you check it out here. And even if you don’t I’d suggest at least checking out the awesome little ad the team explaining the new device at around the 13 minutes 21-second timestamp.
