Age of Empires rounds out the launch civs with the Holy Roman Empire and the Rus

Age of Empires 4 is around the corner, aiming for an October 28 release date. Now we know which eight civilisations will be playable when the game launches, and the names of the four historical campaigns we will be able to play through.

Here are the civilisations that will be in the game, as well as which will get a historical campaign:

  • English (Norman campaign)
  • Mongols (The Mongol Empire campaign)
  • French (The 100 Years War campaign)
  • Rus (The Rise of Moscow campaign)
  • Chinese
  • Delhi Sultanate
  • Abbasid Dynasty
  • Holy Roman Empire

Besides revealing the last two civs, the developers spoke about how community feedback influenced the design of the game. One big system that was brought up with naval combat.

When looking at data from Age of Empires 2 games, very few people used naval options, which made the team question the need to include it. “We see data on all of the Age of Empires games, and naval was one of those things that in Age 2, a lot of people don’t use it, but if it wasn’t there people would miss it so much,” said creative director Adam Isgreen.

“Sometimes we have to ask those hard questions when we’re making games. Do we need to do this? It’s something we felt weird about, so we went to the council and said ‘Hey, even you guys don’t play naval all the time. Do we need it?’ And they said, ‘We see your point, but no, you have to have this.’ It was a great re-affirmation.”

If it has the letters RPG in it, I am there. Still battling with balancing trying to play every single game that grabs my interest, getting 100% in a JRPG, and devoting time to my second home in Azeroth.
