Here we are in August already. Can you ever? But, a new month means a new featured streamer! This month we have the honour of featuring a wonderful human who I call a friend in real life and on stream/in game.
Samwise_Banshee has her audience in stitches most streams, and hosts an open and welcoming community over on Twitch. She streams full time and is South African through and through.
Hey! Tell us about yourself.
My name is Samwise_Banshee. People usually call me Sam or Samwise and a select few have declared my name to be BONCH. I have been streaming for just over a year and have built up an amazing community who make me laugh, cry and everything in between. I have been streaming full time for most of my time on Twitch and I can truly say that entertaining people and creating great content is my passion.
You stream full time. Tell us about a typical day in the life of a self employed streamer.
Being a full time streamer can take your sleeping schedule for a bit of a ride sometimes. So most days I oversleep then wake up in a panic with way too many things to get done before its time to go live. I try to go live sometime between 2PM and 4PM, and I will stream for as long as I can, but I average around 4 and a half hours per stream.
I try to take a few breaks while streaming to make sure my housemate hasn’t burned the house down and to try keep myself fed. Once I’m done I like to wind down in bed watching mindless TV shows, right now I am bingewatching Masterchef Australia.
Which games do you most enjoy streaming?
Borderlands 3 is my current main game. I really enjoy the mechanics and the variety of content that the game has to offer. Also the Borderlands community on Twitch is incredible and has welcomed me with open arms.
At the moment my housemate and good friend FoxandHound (Kelly: another fantastic South African streamer, check him out too!) is teaching me how to play Warzone off stream, and I would like to start incorporating that into my streams in future because I am really enjoying the game.
How important is your community to you and what are your key points at keeping it a safe place to be?
My community means everything to me, they have been incredibly supportive and have given me a reason to go live everyday. I have met some incredible people and made some lifelong friends through my stream and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for all of us.
My stream is a safe place for anybody, I absolutely do not tolerate any racism, sexism, homophobia or transphobia on my stream. I am open about my mental health and have had many open discussions with my stream about various issues, where both I have encouraged them and they have encouraged me to pursue a mentally healthy lifestyle.
Tips for newbies who want to stream or have just started?
Streaming on Twitch it is pretty important to reach Affiliate status, as it unlocks the assets that Twitch provides to help streamers grow, such as emotes, a sub button, channel points, etc.
Something that I did and I always recommend to new streamers is get those 50 followers BEFORE you go live for the first time, this ticks of a major requirement. Next make sure your next few streams have the average 3 viewers required, tell your mom, dad, friends, cousins and your cat to switch your stream on and keep that viewer count up.
Once you hit affiliate the only advice I can give to grow from there is be entertaining and be consistent.
You can only play one game for the rest of ever. Which is it?
It would have to be Borderlands 3, as there is so much replayability to it. It is constantly being updated with new content and events. It being online co-op means that I can always play games with friends.
What is your current goal for your streaming?
Short term, I would like to consistently stream for longer hours, because streaming makes me happy and who wouldn’t want to be happier for longer? And honestly long term I would like to start earning enough from my streams to not have to worry about hustling on the side to meet my monthly commitments. I have come so far in a year and I see myself going much further in the future.
Tell the wonderful people here where and when you stream.
I stream on Twitch
Mostly Monday to Saturday, live from around 14:00 (GMT+2) until late.
Anything else you want us to know?
I co-run an international community Discord called Global Gamers. It is a home for streamers who don’t want the hassle of running their own Discord channel while still maintaining a space of their own for their community.
We currently have a group of streamers involved from all over the world and it has become an amazing place to hang out, meet new people and make new friends.
