In the early hours of this morning, we finally got the traditional September Nintendo Direct. As usual, Yoshiaki Koizumi chaired the show and ‘finger snapped’ us through each major announcement. The big highlights included a brand new 3D Kirby game that looks gorgeous, N64 and SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive now coming to Nintendo’s Online Membership (in a new tier), big-name actors being cast as your favourite plumber and his friends and a good look at Splatoon 3 and Bayonetta 3. If you missed the show – here is the full breakdown.
Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak DLC (Winter 2022)
Just a quick video to introduce this one that didn’t show much except a rather powerful-looking dragonlike monster. However, according to the final image – expect a Massive Expansion in ‘Summer 2022’ (northern hemisphere) and new locales, monsters and even some new hunting actions and quest rank.
Mario Party Superstars – 29 October
Five new boards were revealed, as well as two of the mini-game only modes: Survival and Tag Match. It was again reiterated that all boards and mini-games support online play.
Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragan Roars – 28 October
A new card-based, ‘fresh take on tabletop’ RPGs made by Square Enix. Free Demo available.
Disco Elysium: The Final Cut – 12 October (digital version)
Garth reviewed Disco Elysium back last year (on PC) and rather loved it. So, if the strange CRPG with a crime-solving twist is for you – you’ll be happy you can soon play it on the go.
Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity Expansion Pass Wave 2
Wave 2 – Guardian Of Remembrance will be available on the 29th of October.
Chocobo GP – 2022
Some may have wanted Mario Kart 9 – but instead, we got a Chocobo-flavoured kart racing game from Square Enix. While it has clearly been influenced by Mario Kart – three similar powerups can be collected making them even stronger when attacking in a very Pokemon evolution kind of way.
Final ‘Mr Sakurai Presents’ Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event announced
While we didn’t actually get the final character reveal – we now know that the revel will happen on the 5th of October presented by the man himself (seemingly for the last time).
Kirby And The Forgotten Land – Autumn 2022
A new 3D adventure for Kirby was not an announcement many were expecting. Set in a decidedly friendly-looking post-apocalyptic world, and featuring Kirby’s trademark abilities and a few new twists this looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Animal Crossing New Horizons Specific Direct announced
Just a brief ‘The Roost’ teaser and info that we’ll be getting an AC direct in October detailing the free content coming in November. Here’s our review of the game that took 2020 by storm.
Mario Golf: Super Rush 2nd Free Update – Today!
Koopa Troopa and Ninji join the playable character roster as well as two new courses. Free update available today. Here’s our review of the fun Mario sport adventure.
Disney Magical World 2: Enchanted Edition – this Holiday
‘Spend time with your Disney friends while crafting your own whimsical Disney-inspired costumes.’
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic – 11 Novemebr
Yup, just a few days after Sony announced a remake is on the way – the original KOTOR is making its way to the Switch in all its blocky glory.
Dying Light 2 Stay Human (Cloud Version) & Dying Light: Platinum Edition
For those countries with Cloud gaming on the Switch, they can get the sequel. However, the original’s Platinum Edition will be coming to the Switch on the 19th of October.
Triangle Strategy – 4 March 2022
Utility, morality or liberty – it is your choice to make in the terribly named Triangle Strategy (might be changed before release). It’s that gorgeous HD 2D style we were first exposed to in Octopath Traveler. Thanks to Demo feedback – battle difficulty adjustments can be made, onscreen visuals are clearer, previous dialogue and be reviewed, camera angles can be changed and streamlined ‘game flow and loading times’.
Metroid Dread – 8 October
Another look at the Dread and our first look at the different Biomes (terrain with unique lifeforms) that will be explored and a hint that planet ZDR may even once have been the Chozo homeworld.
Updated Nintendo Switch Online Membership Plan
As has been strongly rumoured – Nintendo announced an update to their Online Membership plan that will now include N64 games starting with: Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Starfox 64, Yoshi’s Story, Zelda Ocarina Of Time, WinBack Covert Operations, Mario Tennis, Sin and Punishment and Dr Mario 64. Quite unexpectedly, however, along with that much-requested feature, SEGA Genesis (Mega Drive) titles would also be included starting with: Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps, Dr Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Ecco The Dolphin, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, Musha, Phantasy Star IV, Ristar, Shining Force, Shinobi III, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Streets Of Rage 2 and Strider. The N64 and Genesis Controllers will also be making a now-wireless come back for $50 each. The official new plan will be called the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack and will be coming in late October. The exact release date and pricing are to be revealed later.
New collections coming to Switch
Shadowrun Trilogy (2022) plus a much anticipated and fully-stocked Castlevania Advance Collection (later today) then made a surprise appearance.
Actraiser Renaissance – Today!
An NES classic now remastered in HD is coming to the Switch. A two-phased action/world-building game that I don’t think anyone was expecting to return.
Deltarune Chapter 2 – Today!
Chapter 2 is available later today as a free update to chapter 1.
A few extra games…
- Hot Wheels Unleashed (30 September 2021)
- Surviving The Aftermath (Holiday 2021)
- Shin Megami Tensei V
- Wreckfest (Fall 2021)
- Arcade Archives PAC-MAN/XEVIOUS (Available Today)
Mario Movie Date and Cast Revealed
The Mario-man himself Shigeru Miyamoto then appeared telling us that the upcoming full-length Super Mario movie would be in theatres in the Holiday period of 2022 (21 December 2022 in North America). The voice cast including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Micahel Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong was also revealed. Interestingly, Mario will be talking ‘a lot’ and Charles Martinet will also have some roles too. So it will be very interesting to see how this all turns out.
A more in-depth look at the new Splatoon title on the way. Some familiar faces, in combination with some new weapons and locations and perhaps even a bit of the story we can look forward to thanks to the cryptic line… “Return of the Mammalians”. We now know Splatoon 3 will take place in Splatsville – the City of Chaos – and the Splatlands!
And one more thing… Bayonetta 3
We know many people were waiting for this one; the first proper view of Bayonetta 3. Nintendo closed out the show with a video showing a different sounding main character plus a substantial amount of gameplay for the new title from Platinum. They also confirmed its 2022 release by teasing a new male character (and possibly even a DMC crossover?).
