SA Gamer Awards 2021: Best Audio Design

As with life, we tend to take a lot of things for granted when it comes to video games, and decent audio design is probably one of the most overlooked aspects of them. The problem is that audio design is never really noticed until it is bad, and that is why we often take the fantastic work done in this department for granted. It is the sort of thing that enhances the overall experience and often elevates a game to greater heights, and that is why it is so important. There is however one genre that often stands out for great audio design, and that is, of course, racing. And this year’s winner in this category comes from this genre, however, goes even goes beyond…

Forza Horizon 5

When it comes to making the perfect virtual racing experience, getting the sound design right is crucial and this is something the team at PlayGround Games absolutely nailed. From the revving of the engine, the tires working overtime to maintain grip or gravel pinging the bodywork of the cars, everything bit of sound in Forza Horizon 5 is just spot on. Even the way the music on the radio fades and changes over to the festival music as you approach it is a nice touch, adding to the overall immersion. Forza Horizon 5 hardly uses new techniques and tricks when it comes to audio design in racing games, but they just did it so damn well, and nobody came close to them this year.

Runners-Up: Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy; Metroid Dread
