SA Gamer Awards 2021: Biggest Surprise

We all know the saying “Expect the Unexpected”, but it’s one thing to know it and another to live it. In gaming, while we’ve seen a lot of the same things like a “new” Battle Royale or another Assassin’s Creed game get announced, there are sometimes things that come onto our radars that we truly couldn’t have expected. And that’s exactly what this award is celebrating. It’s for those games that just blew us away with their… unexpectedness.

But there’s one that takes the Biggest Surprise cake.

Cyberpunk 2077 Getting Two Nominations at the Game Awards 2021!?

The entire team honestly couldn’t believe our eyes when we saw Cyberpunk 2077 on the list of nominees for this year’s awards. Even though it, personally, feels like a year since this game was even a topic of conversation but I thought we all agreed that it was ‘no bueno‘ on a lot of fronts. If only ethically.

But here we sit, in a timeline where Cyberpunk 1997 was nominated for Best Score & Music, and Best Role Playing Game. The latter being a bit of a headscratcher with all of the fantastic releases in the year people could choose from. Luckily CD Project Red didn’t walk away with more awards this year, but I doubt that will teach the corporate overlords of those talented developers any lessons on humility.

That all said, I would still like to play Cyberpunk. Maybe Epic will give the game to us for free on the Thursday of its anniversary, and save us all from navigating another moral dilemma.

Runner up: Humankind

Honourable Mentions: Age of Empires IV, Kena: Bridge of Spirits

I obviously don't know anything about games. I'm just here for the free food, and to push my feminist agenda.
