“The peaceful world of Dream Land is in great danger. In Dream Land, dreams always flowed from the wonderful Fountain of Dreams. The Fountain of Dreams collected the hopes and dreams of all living things. It was also responsible for the sweet dreams and rest that come from deep sleep.” That’s exactly how you’r introduced to the game it is now up to Kirby to save Dream Land from King Dedede who has destroyed the power source of the fountain by breaking the Star Rod. Kirby has decided to travel across Dream Land in search of the broken pieces to restore dreams and peace to the land once again.

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land is a Game Boy Advance remake of the NES game Kirby’s Adventure. The remake includes a four-player mode, upgraded graphics and a few level and enemy changes. Some of the level names include Vegetable Valley, Ice Cream Island, Grape Garden and Yogurt Yard. The levels are fairly simple to get through with some allowing the player to just float by all the enemies and others a little tougher restricting you from any air travel. Levels include elemental challenges such as water and wind as well as a few traps scattered throughout the levels. With it being a platformer you can expect quite a few…well umm platforms, but unlike other platformers missing a platform jump isn’t really a problem since Kirby can just float back up into the air.

The game also includes Sub games throughout the levels. Some of the sub games include ‘Bomb Rally’ which is a tennis type of mini game played with an actual lit bomb being hit around by frying pans… winning this will grant the player extra lives. ‘Kirby’s Air Grind’ has players skating on a star grinding on a rainbow pipe racing alternate coloured Kirby’s to reach the finish line first. ‘Arena’, Kirby will have to fight for Maxim Tomatoes and copy abilities in a gladiator coliseum and ‘Quick Draw’, a showdown to see who is the fastest samurai in the land. Just as with Bomb Rally, every sub game grants additional lives to the player if won. Another area added to each level is the Museum. The Museum allows the player to view and copy abilities for free, a power-up room basically.

Kirby is lucky enough to have access to a wide array of abilities in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, from fire, electricity, tornado and ice to name a few. When Kirby copies an ability he also gains a cool hat, for instance copying the beam ability grants Kirby a jester hat, the sword ability grants Kirby a green elven hat (that looks awfully similar to another popular elf’s hat, related to the Nintendo brand…) with a sword, copying the spark ability grants Kirby a crown with electricity sparking above his head and blazes like a blue inferno and the fire ability grants a crown with an actual inferno above Kirby’s head. Swimming also equips Kirby with a snorkel so Kirby’s always dressed for success.

There are no shortages of enemies in this Kirby adventure, from a Waddle Dee, Waddle Doo, Sword Knight, Chilly, Poppy Bros.JR, Wheelie and Noddy to name a few. The enemies are quite easy to dispatch and with so many around Kirby’s copy ability is put to good use, although not all enemies grant an ability. There are also mini bosses scattered through levels, they’re a little tougher to dispel but still simple enough to defeat and grants Kirby an ability if you so choose to take it. The main boss battles unfortunately do not increase much in difficulty either but is still tons of fun to play through.

The game, just as its original version, is pretty short but do not be fooled as this takes away nothing from it. The music is catchy and superb, the upgraded graphics is a joy to look at and the copy ability grants the player a huge variety of methods to get through each stage with. Kirby: Nightmare in Dreamland is a must play for all Kirby and platformer fans out there.

Good

  • Tons of copy abilities to choose from | Soundtrack | Upgraded Graphics

Bad

  • Too Short
