A next-gen Xbox console is on track to launch in 2026 according to rumours. Apparently, Microsoft are planning to release two devices - a traditional high-end console and a dockable Switch-like handheld.

......

Magg revealed that Xbox are still pretty much planning to release a next-gen console. The target release window is currently 2026 but obviously, plans can change and nothing is yet set in stone.

In addition, the next-gen Xbox will reportedly have two SKUs. One is a traditional high-end console akin to the Xbox Series X, while the second one is a bit more exciting. According to Magg, the second device will be a Switch-like dockable handheld.

Hmmm, a handheld

I am actually thinking it may be a game streaming device that requires Game Pass subscription. I can't see them releasing a fully blown handheld.

Also think a dedicated game streaming device will be their niche. Going toe to toe with established hand helds like ROG and Steam Deck will be a lose out the gate.

MS are lost right now. They need to get on top of this situation ASAP. Leaks and rumors are leading the way.

Why? They have done very well in the hardware space with the Surface line of products so this would be a minor pivot only.

They've got more skin in the hardware game than Valve does and they build the operating systems.

Worried about the future of Xbox tbh, bunch of headless chickens running the show at the moment.

First they were going to refresh the X and S, then just the S, then just a storage upgrade, then new console in 2028, then in 2026/27, now a handheld too.

3 days to put Bethesda games on Gamepass after closing the deal, now after 4 months we don't even have Activision stuff on Gamepass.

None of those things were ever officially announced…

Dropping the Wii U earlier than intended and launching the Switch worked out well for Nintendo, but hoping to the get the jump on Sony with the Dreamcast put the nail in the hardware coffin of SEGA - it risks people waiting on the PS6 to see what it will have to offer (the PS5 Pro also a fly in the ointment).

Of course MS can afford to swallow the loses, but these recent announcements would indicate to me that the higher ups aren't happy with the status quo at Xbox. We'll see what happens, just difficult to see the point of the hardware if they do end up taking a platform agnostic stance on software.

Info in papers submitted to the FTC are lot more official than a Twitter rumour.

Xbox is getting left behind. PS already has the cloud handheld out (although it could do with an OLED and better price) and a Pro incoming.

A reminder though that PlayStation can’t do “cloud” to save their life and are literally having Microsoft do that for them.

Microsoft has been doing that on any and every hardware device for years now and PlayStation requires a PS5 at home to use it so there isn’t really any cloud at all, just a hopefully solid link home.

It’s not a particularly future forward device leaving anyone behind.

Rumours already falling apart. So much for Starfield going to PS5
Well it's hard to trust the very same person who got it wrong to begin with.

Would have been nice for Phil to just tweet: "No Starfield on PS5" and put some of the noise down.

I think sometimes they use these kind of things as sort of "false flag" operations and let them play out on purpose to see what the market's feeling is about it all.

Maybe, but I don’t think it would be happening the way it is now. This just seems like chaos with no upside.

MS can get away with putting titles onto other platforms, just do it a year later. They can have their cake and eat it too like Sony does.

Looks like the rumours about MS killing Xbox have been squashed as well now.

Still, lets wait for the official announcement this week sometime. I expects when it happens and nothing really changes, all the doomers and gloomers will find something else to moan about MS.

Reporter Shannon Liao said in her weekly Substack industry newsletter that Spencer moved to reassure staff during an all-hands meeting on Tuesday.

“The company held an internal Tuesday townhall where Spencer told employees that there were no plans to stop making consoles, and that Xboxes would continue to be part of a strategy that involves multiple kinds of devices,” Liao reported. Microsoft has yet to comment.

Why? It’s more fun to speculate, none of us actually think we know what’s going to happen.

There have been rumors that the Surface team are going to take over the hardware side. But I don’t think the hardware has been the problem.

The following list is everything that was revealed during the Xbox business update event:

Four Xbox games announced for other consoles, not Starfield or Indiana Jones

No plans to fundamentally change Xbox's exclusive strategy

Xbox team "excited" and wants to "learn" from making these titles multiplatform

Diablo 4 is coming to Xbox Game Pass from Activision Blizzard very soon

Xbox Game Pass now has 34 million subscribers, service will continue to remain exclusive

Exciting hardware news will be revealed (and maybe released?) in Holiday 2024

Xbox plans to deliver the "largest technical leap ever" in the next hardware generation

They had like 4 things to announce and still cocked up.

Diablo IV is not coming to 34 million users as stated because it’s not coming to Core. So knock about 11 million off that number.

It was good that they just said outright no on Starfield or IJ. 4 smaller or older or live service games going over is a good move. Only upside there.

The hardware stuff just sounded like nonesense to be honest. Largest tech leap EVAR!!! Complete with secret sauce again I’m sure.

The games said to be coming are Pentiment, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves.

Of those, personally only interested in Hi-Fi Rush.

Optimistic Indiana Jones comes at some point.
