I have a similar decision pending and would like some perspective.
resigned. August is my last month in someone elses employ.
Come September I am striking out on my own.
Know it won't be easy. I am prepared to slog, so am excited and apprehensive.

Been "per hour" now for 13 months. I've never worked this hard in my life. I've also never loved the job or the freedom that comes from working my own hours, from home or a pool or a beach in goa more. I need to plan a holiday now because my wife is getting upset that I work 2 many hours, vs me doing very bloody little all day for 15 years in a salaried position.
Things might change dramatically depending on whether we go to Norway or New Zealand next year but for now I'm loving it.
Also need to go chat to boss to pump my hourly rate up.

5,5%, suppose it could be worse. At least I'm still employed, considering our layoffs a few months back.

Fortunate yes, congrats on still being employed.

    It's tough out there.

Been retrenched once before, really don't want it again last time was around 6 months of applying to any-everything before finally landing at the current company.

So, pro that I have work, con that more and more people aren't getting laid off or jumping ship beforehand. Leads to no one being replaced and work just being redistributed.

    Really worrying about the future.

I'd love to be retrenched currently

but that's because I have a ticket out of here and it doesn't compare to the normal person.

but 6 months' salary would be godly right now and then I can just step onto a plane and be gone, now I have to slog another 6-12 months before going.

In the unfortunate position of not really any options to eject. Besides expenses, don't have the skills that most countries value from immigrants, so entry chances are low.

Just need to weather the storm.

Good luck with holding out on your end
