Default I need help with UMD replacement. I've replaced it twice already.

I have a PSP 1000 that had a UMD drive that was clicking. I know there's a lot of stuff online about PSP repair, but I've replaced the UMD drive twice already and am having the same problem. Searching google told me that the UMD drive needed to be replaced. So I bought a used one off of ebay, installed it, and it didn't work and clicked even louder than the first one. So I asked for a refund, and got it.

Then I ordered another UMD drive from ebay, from (what looked like) a more reputable seller. I just got done with the install tonight, and it is also whirring and clicking. I held down the little button inside the umd door to check the laser, each time, and never saw the laser light up with any of the umd drives, including the original one.

This has been my first time messing with the inside of a PSP, but it seemed pretty simple. And, I didn't miss any connections or plugs. And it still won't read any discs, of which I've tried many different games.

Am I just getting broken UMD drives off of ebay, or is there maybe a different problem with my PSP?

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I'll just get a new psp. Any recommendations on the best model #?

Also, I guess I'll just hold on the the other umd drives just in case they are good still. I'm not sure about that. But thanks for the advice.
