And games run from the external drive? In that case just need a 2.5" enclosure and slap this baby into it.

It was actually discovered that the internal SATA connector on PS4 is bridged to a USB interface anyway. Which is why loading times is kak to begin with. So running it via external usb won't have an impact.

In putting together its Linux port - which is now publicly available though of little use to end-users - the team has made good progress in adapting the OS for the custom hardware, but notes that 3D acceleration and HDMI audio are still work-in-progress. On top of that, it seems that despite the actual hardware using a SATA interface, the PS4 itself appears to communicate with the hard drive via USB - a curious state of affairs. The Blu-ray drive does use the SATA AHCI standard, but is currently untested in the Linux build.

    Regardless, there's still a difference:

Unfortunately, using USB does mean slightly longer loading times in many cases - in the region of 10 per cent. Battlefield One has some of the longest loading times out there, with the Mud and Blood campaign stage taking almost two minutes to complete on PS4's stock drive. In this scenario, we clocked 51 seconds externally, versus 47 with the SSD installed internally.

2TB doesn't get you far at this stage of the game I don't think, and the price is not good. For the same amount would rather have a smaller internal SSD and a large external mechanical drive.

The most important part for when I upgrade finally:

"The 4TB external drive actually improves loading times over PS4's regular drive, as well as having the advantage of offering more space."

Still running my pro at stock so I can just move up in the world.

They are referring to an SSD in that quote. All the other tests have the external mechanical drive performing better than the internal drive.

Yes, the stock internal drive, the SSD is the lone like for like comparison. It shows that a like for like drive performs better when installed internally.

Wonder what these bad boys would go for locally

    Edit:
Will probably have to sell/rent a body part or two

For a star to be born, there is one thing that must happen: a gaseous nebula must collapse.
    So collapse.
    Crumble.
    This is not your destruction.
    This is your birth.

Also then there is no harm in unplugging it when not in use.
If I say turned the ps4 on without it plugged in, would it cause major issues, or would those games just not be playable?
It will do all the formatting for you and as stated above it's entirely dedicated to the PS4.

Your primary hard drive still carries the OS so yes you can happily plug it out and as you say that stuff on there just won't be accessible.

I would advise going as large as possible from the word go so you don't end up with multiple externals down the line.

As was said previously internal or external is really a non-issue speed wise but if you really wanted to cater to that placebo effect then copy your active game to the internal and move it back to your 'backup' external when done.
