Apparently Patel used it as a example stating "you cant just jump in your car to go and buy ciggarettes"
So you can still buy it along with other essentials.

People will use it as an excuse to get out of the house and I probably wont blame people for doing so.

Apparently because of the violence that may result from the ingestion of alcohol.

We have noted the fear and the possibility of the escalation of gender-based violence that could come as a result of liquor now being consumed at home. As an extra measure, we have plans in place to beef up our FCS Units (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences) to deal with this threat. The number 0800 150 150 can be used to report incidents of gender based violence for urgent response.
That was taken from the link posted by the ginger one.

I agree with that completely, worst thing to be hanging out at home stressed about the situation and money, drinking while you are around your wife and kids (i know this is not only a male problem but certainly the majority).

Guy at work said over a month ago if they send people home here in Aus you will see a spike in domestic abuse. I believe him. If you see how some people are treating store workers you can see that tensions are extremely high for some.

Besides in this situation there are much better ways to be spending your money, Gov can't be sending cops all over the place because of domestic violence.

Fiance got paid 75% of her salary. The other 25% may or may not come. This has happened before and they've paid the other 25%, but with things being as they are, we're not sure they'll pay the balance anymore.

    They backpedaled on the article:

"Trade and Industry Minister Ebrahim Patel made a statement on Wednesday that cigarette sales were not considered a basic good – with the clarification being that it would not be allowed for anyone to go to a shop simply for the purpose of buying cigarettes. However, if you happen to be at the shop to buy a basic good like bread or milk, then presumably you will also be able to buy cigarettes, assuming they are on the shelf.
Note: An earlier version of this article said it seemed that the sale of cigarettes would stop, which may now not be the case. Hey, these are confusing times – Ed."
