Default Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos ? (Headphones)

Spatial surround Face off in 2020

So both have matured a bit, what do you prefer and why?

IMO, Spatial accuracy is better than Sonic, also the bass is better between the two, CoD MW was incredible with atmos, rarely spoken about but the sound in that game is immaculate and played it with atmos all the way. Don't know if it's atmos supported or the atmos got emulated by the app, but it was glorious.

Dolby's audio spatializer will do a better job with Atmos tracks because they can access the metadata to place the Atmos effects. MS' solution has no access to that data and only "sees" the surround channels on the horizontal axis.

Atmos just always sounds better when I feel the need to fiddle and check up on Sonic again.

Also Atmos now has equaliser options which is lovely.

Of course if you are stingy, Sonic is free.

Is Dolby no only better if the game supports Dolby?

Well all games support Dolby. Some also support Dolby Atmos.

Dolby Atmos for Headphones virtualises all of them to any stereo headset.

Atmos is nice for campaign games but the increase in the wider sound stage messes up prediction on distances for footprints so I prefer 2.0 for competitive fps games.

I see Denon just released a free Dolby Atmos Height Virtualisation upgrade for their AVRs:

Perhaps the new consoles might offer something similar, not just virtual headphone support?

The games themselves don't support Dolby, it's the consoles that encode the game's audio as Dolby or DTS. PCM offers better sound quality than either of those options, so preferable to leave the audio as PCM.

Atmos requires the game engine to supply the height channels. The output from these games is not encoded but left as PCM with the console supplying the height channel info via Dolby MAT (the same way the Apple TV does it).

Just remember that Atmos is only supported by a select number of games. Anything else and it's just the upmixer guessing at height information.
