Biometric's Space Thread

Looks like a RPi on top but guessing it's not.
The 1st generation ZWO AsiAir used a Raspberry Pi 4. The 2nd and 3rd gen has a custom board.

The AsiAir is a astrophotography computer. You get free software like Nina you can run on your own hardware too. It manages the whole process including tracking, focussing and taking photos.

Going for NGC3372 again for no reason other than wanting to compare attempt #1 with #2. I have no knowldege of NGC3372, just happened to be the random object in front of my lens in 2023...

A friend of mine is into his photography. He bought a rig like that and could never figure it out, so eventually sold it

He's the kind of guy that often likes the idea of a thing rather than the thing itself.

This has a huge learning curve. And once you have captured the data, to maximise your results you need to invest about R9,000 in software called Pixinsight and the RC Astro plugins. Took me nearly a week of evening classes to learn to use it. Used the month trial, still need to buy it.

I have a small collection of themed controllers. What I realised was that hunting for controllers and trying to find and make a deal was more fun than that actually having the controller. Not the same but similar behaviour :)

As per Motörhead's 1980 song Ace of Spades
“The chase is better than the catch.”

My rig is too heavy to move around so I need to build a permanent observatory in the back yard. So I got the Seestar S50 smart telescope so long.

First successful capture and post processing. The Horsehead Nebula:

Permanent observatory 😎

Take some photos of the Saturn, Mars and Jupiter.

My gear isn’t meant for planetary, rather galaxies and nebula.

For planetary you need a much larger aperture and focal length. And the technique is different, you take video with thousands of frames then use a process called lucky imaging which selects only the best for stacking.

I can see Jupiter and their moons with the smart telescope but no detail.
