LEGO Dimensions hit SA a few weeks ago (you can check out my review of the base game here). Almost all of the game’s Year 1 content was available at launch as well, making collecting everything a rather daunting prospect. While you don’t need every single pack in order to unlock all the game’s content, you do need quite a few packs to do so. (If you want to know which characters have which abilities, have a look at this article.)

The Toys

The Portal 2 Level pack is one of those must-have packs. It comes with the minifigure of Chell, who is the only character with the Portal gun, and as such, the only character who can complete puzzles requiring the Portal gun. She also has the acrobatics ability. This level pack is currently the only way to get Chell’s minifigure.

The pack also comes with the Sentry Turret and Companion Cube. The Cube has the unique ability to use weight-activated switches. Characters can carry it around to solve puzzles, and when upgraded it will follow you around. One of its upgrades also gives the laser deflection ability when Chell carries it.  The Sentry Turret has the laser ability, which destroys gold LEGO, and can be upgraded to be able to blow up silver LEGO as well, making it a handy vehicle to have around.

The Level

Chell is also one of the few silent playable characters, which makes sense for her character. Of course, you probably won’t even notice as the brand new Portal 2 level features the voice of GLaDOS  and Wheatley to keep you entertained. The new level features several puzzles in Portal 2 style, much like the Portal level in the base game. Now that you’re armed with your new Companion Cube, Sentry Turret and Portal gun, the puzzles can make full use of portals and weight-activated switches, making the level feel even more Portal-y than the base game level. There’s plenty of collectibles that require other abilities to unlock, but you can complete the level with just the toys that come with this pack.

Chell also unlocks the Portal 2 adventure world, which continues to capture the essence of Portal 2. There are tons of puzzles in this large world, which feels even larger as you can unlock additional puzzle areas as you go. You could easily spend hours unlocking everything this world has to offer.

Value for Money

As cost is a factor with toys-to-life games, I feel it’s worth mentioning that this Level Pack really felt like excellent value for money. As a LEGO collector, I love Chell’s minifigure, as well as the Sentry Turret and the Companion Cube especially. Both the level and the Portal 2 world are great fun to play, and felt meaty enough to be worth R450 together with the physical toys.

Bottom line? If you enjoyed the Portal 2 level in the base game, the Portal 2 Level Pack is a must-buy!

Disclaimer: I received a copy of the LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack for review purposes, however, my opinions are my own and are based on my experience playing the game. I purchased the Portal 2 Level Pack myself.
