Cool Kitchen Stuff

With the new Get Together expansion pack a few months away, The Sims 4 team has given us a new stuff pack to tide us over for a while. Cool Kitchen Stuff is much like the other stuff packs we’ve seen so far for The Sims 4, with several new outfits, hairstyles and objects, plus a new gameplay object. Let’s take a closer look.

The main attraction of this stuff pack is the much-advertised ability to make ice cream, which can be created using the included ice cream machine. Your Sims will pour milk and a few other mystery ingredients into this inexpensive appliance, fiddle around a bit, pull some funny faces, and eventually produce a carton of ice cream. This carton ends up in their personal inventory, and can be set down on a surface, where toppings and garnishes can be set. Sims can then take bowls or cones of ice cream to enjoy. I must admit I found it very strange that the ice cream goes into the maker’s inventory instead of being put directly onto the nearest counter like every other kind of food. The carton also can’t go in the fridge, but individual cones and bowls can. These quirks aside, my Sims really seemed to like their ice creams.

There are around 30 flavours of ice cream to be made, some of them with additional effects, like putting a Sim in a certain mood, temporarily changing their skin colour, or increasing or decreasing the speed of their weight loss or weight gain (in the case of the aptly named ‘Weight of the World’ flavour). The available flavours and the quality of the ice cream created are based on the maker’s cooking skill. There are also nearly 20 toppings and garnishes available, leading to a huge number of potential combinations.

Watching Sims eat their ice creams is pretty entertaining, as many of them will get brain freeze right away, because, like real people, they love ice cream. And, like real people, they just keep eating said ice cream despite the pain. There’s also a danger of them dropping their ice creams, which is always a tragic event. If you have the Get to Work expansion pack, you can sell ice cream cones or bowls from your retail store.

In addition to the ice cream machine, there is also new furniture to restyle your Sim’s kitchen. While there’s only one set of matching counters, chairs, and appliances, they come in a wide range of colours, allowing you potentially make a number of different kitchens with the same items. Everything is colour coded, including the fridge, stove and chairs. Unfortunately the fridge and stove have mid-range stats, which does help them be more affordable for poorer Sims, but they are far inferior (stat wise) to the other stoves and fridges already available in the game. Which is a real pity, since I really like how they look. There are also quite a few decorative objects to spruce up any kitchen, including some cute knife and utensil racks, salt and pepper shakers, and a plate drying rack. While these are purely decorative, they can help add a little more realism to any kitchen, adding to the already impressive selection of ‘clutter’ objects in the game.

Finally, there are several new hairstyles and outfits. There are five hairstyles for female Sims and two for male Sims, and ten or so clothing items for each gender. These are all in a pretty cute style that I rather liked. Alas, there is once again nothing for child Sims, making me suspect (or hope!) that they are eventually going to make some child-specific packs. Fortunately, kids can enjoy the ice cream treats that older Sims create for them.

Cool Kitchen Stuff costs R99 (US$10) from Origin, and is currently only available digitally. The download comes in at under 150 MB, which is much smaller than most of the free updates to the game. If ice cream and more kitchen styling options is something you feel your Sims 4 game needs, then this is the stuff pack for you. Personally, I can’t wait to get back to the game so I can get my Sims to work unlocking more of those delicious-looking ice cream flavours.

Good

  • ICE CREAM | Cute new outfits

Bad

  • Still nothing for child Sims | New items are low stat items

Summary

If ice cream and more kitchen styling options is something you feel your Sims 4 game needs, then this is the stuff pack for you.
