Movie Hangout Stuff is a new stuff pack for The Sims 4 that came out earlier this month. Like other stuff packs for Sims 4, it costs R100, and is currently only available digitally, and it includes a couple of new gameplay items. Let’s take a closer look.

The new gameplay objects are huge projection TV screens, one wall-mountable and the other freestanding. With the TV comes about ten machinima movies that your Sims can watch. They’re well done and are quite entertaining to watch, and even have a plot. They come in various genres, like horror and kiddies, and Sims will react differently to them depending on their favourite preferences. These movies are also available on the normal TVs that were already in the game, so you don’t have to build an outdoor cinema or a massive TV room just to accommodate the massive new screens.

There’s also a new popcorn machine, which produces popcorn in one of several flavours, depending on the cooking skill of your Sim. Sims will happily eat this while watching a movie, and may spill their bowl if there’s a scary moment. There are a number of new social interactions for Sims to use during and after watching a film.

Buy mode features a host of new furniture to add to your Sims’ homes. I must admit that when I think of ‘movie hangout stuff’, ‘boho-chic’ is not the style that comes to mind, but the furniture did grow on me. Most of the large items come in 10 different colours, so you can can either use the crazy colours for a really over the top room, or just use one colourful piece to brighten up a room. Alternatively, there are a number of more subdued shades that look really good too, which you could use for more calming decor. There isn’t any new wallpaper or flooring included to match this furniture, however, which is a pity.

Finally, there are new clothing items and hairstyles. There’s a short and a longish hairstyle for men, both solid additions, and three great styles for women, plus a colourful version of the new braids hairstyle. Male Sims get a few new tops and pants in a pretty casual style, while children get some colourful, if uninspiring, new items . As always, adult female Sims get the lion’s share of the new clothing, with a few new dresses, tops and pants. I do like the colourful options, especially the long dress and fun jeans, but all three of the new dresses left my Sims feeling a little… exposed. That’s just my personal preference of course, but I have seen it mentioned by other Simmers, so I felt it was worth mentioning.

Initially, I found myself a little underwhelmed by Movie Hangout Stuff, especially as I found it difficult to connect the popcorn and movies thing to the outfits and furniture included in the pack. I still find the two an odd combination, but the new stuff did grow on me. The furniture is a great way to spruce up a dull room, and the outfits certainly make a statement. I know I often comment on this aspect, but there is a lack of children’s content in this pack. No hairstyles, a couple of uninteresting clothing items, and very little else. Kids can watch the films, of course, but it feels like there could have been more content for child Sims.

The bottom line? If the boho-chic style appeals to you, this pack is a must-buy. Otherwise, check out the trailer below to get a feel for the content of the pack to see if it’s for you.

Good

  • Cool new movies for you and your Sims to watch | Funky furniture and outfits

Bad

  • Strangely mismatched theme | Very little content for children

Summary

The Sims 4 Movie Hangout Stuff has new gameplay objects will keep your Sims entertained. The rest of the content doesn't quite match the movie theme, but if the boho chic style appeals to you, you'll definitely want to pick up this stuff pack.
