Concord

Might be worth picking up a physical copy, but then Sony might bring it back later as something different so it'll kill the novelty of it, also a physical copy of a online game is pretty useless anyway don't see it shooting up in value.

Almost certainly going to go F2P.

What options do they realistically have?

1. Leave it dead and write everything off as a total loss.
2. Make significant changes and re-release it as a priced game. But nothing they do is going to suddenly make the game popular as a priced game.
3. Make it F2P and introduce loot box type cosmetic purchases. Then hope that enough people play for free to keep the game running while you make it better over time.

Chance of success for 2 is almost zero, for 3 i'd put it at maybe 20%.

It being such a flop might make more people curious to check it out when it does go F2P.
I was thinking that exact thing while watching gameranx on YouTube.

The general gameplay seems to get praise and as a F2P people will try it, some will try it just to see what the biggest flop in history is like. Then maybe some stay because the game plays well. Who knows?

Gotta try something to recover that $250m.

Sony should send Hello Games in there. They are masters of the turnaround.

I don't understand how something like that can cost 250m there's nothing there, they should have been way skeptical once it got past 50m

Buy a
Physical copies already hitting the $100 mark.

Get a sealed game and a Concorde controller. The bundle might be worth a sweet deal in a few years.

Also, why is there a physical release for an online game? Does it even have a disc, or just a download code?

What is even harder to understand is why Sony acquired Firewalk Studios when the project was already in year 7 of development already in 2023. It can only be down to desperation on Sony's part to try infiltrate the multiplayer market. I thought Sony acquiring Bungie was to get a foot in the door with online multiplayer games, but that turned out to be a let down as well.

But yeah, this didn't age well at all.

Jim Ryan, President & CEO of SIE, had some nice things to say: “Firewalk Studios is led by a world-class team that is highly experienced and deeply passionate about creating exceptional multiplayer games.”

And Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, chimed in too: “I think fans will be very pleased when they see what Firewalk has in store for them.”

It's a physical disc, doubt it had a very high print run considering it's an online game, Amazon had them a few days ago for £29.99 and they sold out pretty quickly after they announced the cancellation.

Quick money for people that grabbed a few copies, last 2 ebay sales were £99.99

Concord Cost Sony Over $200 Million, And Didn't Make a Single Cent

There’s been much discussion about how much money Sony wasted on gigaflop Concord, and now we have a ballpark estimate. It had previously been reported that the company had spent $400 million on the game, although this number always seemed a little high. Now Kotaku is citing two sources as saying the initial development deal for the release was somewhere in the region of $200 million.

The actual cost is likely much higher than that, though, because this number excludes the acquisition of developer Firewalk and marketing expenses. The Japanese giant purchased the Washington studio in 2023, after it had spent several years bankrolled by Probably Monsters making a prototype of the first-person shooter.

So while the final figure is unlikely to be quite as high as the previously reported $400 million, there’s a good chance it was within touching distance of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which allegedly cost around $300 million to make. That’s extraordinary.

The even more excruciating detail here is that PlayStation won’t see a single cent from its investment. All original Concord customers were refunded, the game will never return, and the studio has been shut down.

With that much money spent I'm surprised they didn't just put it on PS+ and try to get some of that money back with cosmetics and such.

Then again these developers were likely overpaid due to where they are so probably cheaper for them to just slit the throat and move on.
