Basically post anything God of War related in this thread. Hopefully I’ll update it with my journey when I finally play Ragnarok. I’m targeting December to make a start with that.

For now I just wanted to share my journey in getting the Ascension plat.

In short, I was underwhelmed when I played it on release a decade ago and never got around to getting the plat until I had this stupid idea of revisiting it all these years later.

I made arrangements to get a PS3 from a relative and borrowed a friends account (a process in itself to set) to get the game as there are no physical copies in the wild.

That’s when I encountered my first problem. This was an OG 80gb fat PS3 and the game was 36gb which meant that the digital copy required 72gb of working space to install.. the PS3 fully formatted only gave me 71gb to work with [emoji28]

So I had to do a ‘hard drive upgrade’ just to make the available space. Following and online guide, the process wasn’t as time consuming as I recall so I spent a day moving stuff between hard drives until I had a free drive to work with. Formatted to fat 32 and proceeded to reinstall and set up..

Several failed installs over a week (the PS3 downloads really slow!) either due to download errors or corrupted files, I was close to giving up when my brother suggested maybe I try another drive he had lying around.

Hard drive 2 worked and the game installed!

After installation I thought it would be smooth sailing but after resolving a few issues with the profile being on too many ‘consoles’ (caused by the hard drive swaps), I managed to boot up the game without my existing save due to me not having plus at the time I originally played it.

So a new start on hard to get the remaining trophies seemed like a reasonable challenge but I was brought to my knees as I realised that the controllers I had with the console were not up to the task.

Some had drift and some didn’t hold a charge so I went out and got another controller which carried me through the game until I hit THE roadblock.. aka the Trial of Archimedes.

Simply put, it’s unnecessarily difficult and had me rolling back the years to get it done in-spite of the controller breaking and triggers getting stuck during the many attempts it took me to get passed the trials. With my new controller reassembled from the parts of the broken ones before it, I powered through the remainder of the game (which was piss easy after the trials) to claim the final trophies I required and satisfactorily pop that platinum earlier today!

In the words of somebody.. GG EZ.

LoL nice journey man. That’s a lot of effort for a Plat.

I’ve got every GoW plat except for Ascension and Ragnarok, I haven’t played either yet.

Ragnarok I will 100% be playing, hopefully before the end of the year. Ascension for whatever reason I just didn’t play and now unless it comes via streaming or remaster or something I doubt I ever will play.

I have to check, but I think I have the platinum for both the newer games.

I’m not a trophy/award hunter, but I appreciate it when games award you with one for simply playing the game and doing everything the game itself requires.

I’m unreasonably annoyed by the meta they introduce otherwise.

I agree. I think Sony has adjusted the way they hand out plats on the newer games to make it feel more ‘right’ as the difficulty based ones were just unfair to the majority. Imo you beat a game, you should get a trophy for that.. all other achievements should just add to your gamer xp based on how how difficult it was to achieve.

Yeah.. I was committed once I made the arrangements to get the console so powered through. Will compare Ragnarok notes with you when the time comes!

So playing ascension made me long for more of that gameplay loop so I decided to play god of war 3 remastered as I had already returned the borrowed ps3 I used for ascension.

I remember feeling let down when I originally played it and I attributed it to series fatigue as I had played and platted 1 & 2 along with playing through chains of Olympus on the psp around then.

This time was different and I really appreciated the slickness of the gameplay and the ridiculous violence angry kratos brought. The story was good enough and the thing that sets this apart from the current series is the number of boss battles in this one.

I’m glad I played this after ascension as I really enjoyed that a second time around but had I played that after this I don’t think my opinion would’ve been the same and that’s probably why I gave up on it a decade ago.

Long story short, I’ve completed it and had my full and now I’m ready for Ragnarok in a months time [emoji4]

Right, God of War Ragnarok. What a journey! I'll try to post my thoughts without spoilers and perhaps discuss that later if anybody wants to get into that. I am assuming you've played the 2018 version ;)

Firstly, I enjoyed it. Great character progression as expected with this iteration of Kratos and the combat gets better once you start unlocking moves and attachments.

It took me roughly 67 hours to plat on normal difficulty even though the PlayStation says 105 hours but that's mainly due to it sitting idle on the title screen or pause menu while I got distracted at home (life of a real dad). I related to a lot of the internal struggles that Kratos goes through in terms of trying to protect Atreus whilst trying to let him develop into the best version of himself so those scenes hit me in the feels hard. That said, this version of Kratos is not the Kratos I fell in love with and I believe that if this story was told as a new IP instead it would probably do just as well based off the studio's history.

The thing that bugged me (and this is just common in the industry today) is the unnecessary padding that goes on to justify the price tag. The world and realms were already set up in the 2018 game so there wasn't a huge shift in assets to create new environments imo so they would've had enough time to work on a tighter story. But instead you were forced to move to realms to make use of those assets for the sake of lazy fetch quests that turned out to be just a waste of time to justify a decision. It should've been dealt with better imo. The game looked great but I don't feel like the graphics were truly next gen and I still think that the last of us 2 on my PS4 Pro is still the best looking game I've played.

I felt the game was in two parts, Fimbulwinter and Ragnarok. The Fimbulwinter part started dragging on for the sake of it instead of progressing the story (This is the main story and not the side quests). It got to a point where I was really struggling to find the motivation to pick up the controller and that was crushing as the story was really good with some great moments and twists along the way. Then came ragnarok which for all the build up was quicker than the blink of an eye and as a result left me wanting. Thank goodness for the extra bosses I fought post game. I felt the difficulty balance was not right as some fights had unnecessarily difficult enemies / bosses and as a result made you work harder than you should at a particular point in the game. I also disliked the placement of health refills as there was either an abundance or sparsity of health.

I decided to get the worst parts out of the way before giving attention to the things I loved about the game. The characters are great with exceptional performances and you're never left feeling any repetition apart from Mimir shouting "Brother, you're covered in bifrost". There's enough humour and stories told along the way that made the back an forth between areas bearable. The combat was good but the funny thing is that they moved to the over shoulder cam to improve the world but it does limit the combat with the blades especially. There is a great satisfaction though in the violent enemy executions with the various weapons and each weapon has its purpose and use case which is great.

The enemy variety and bosses are far more than the previous game which is a relief because I felt that was most lacking in that game. I had a great time fighting off each challenge that came my way and found that I felt a great sense of accomplishment as I progressed through each battle. The side quests were good and I had the most fun post game just going around on my own accord looking for a fight and collecting items along the way. The trials has a different twist to them this time which I appreciated and now that I've finished the game I've been on you tube and seen that I've missed a few things along the way that I may want to go back to get at some point.

Is it my favourite god of war game? No. But it's a damn good game and I'm looking forward to what the Valhalla DLC has in store for me.

That’s a great write up- I still haven’t finished it yet unlike the 2018 GoW which I couldn’t put down until done.

Also thought of another issue. Somehow the god of war can use the blades to jump over canyons yet he’s easily defeated by a step [emoji23]

Valhalla DLC completed. Enjoyed the rogue like version of the game and the surprises from the past that came along during the game.

It’s not short by any stretch and the fact that it’s free is extremely commendable for Sony Santa Monica in today’s greedy world.

I did find it challenging and kept getting annoyed when I found myself with little health in a latter room but once I upgraded and managed to find a rhythm I was able to get through the game and complete the story.

I can’t see this version of Kratos being the main protagonist in the series going forward so perhaps the baton will pass onto the remaining cast.

I once again have 100% completion in every god of war title!
