There will be soldering required, I’m going to buy a second hand one off Facebook marketplace that has stick drift (around $30) and see if I can fix it. Just a little play around to see if I can get it right.

The nostalgia kicked in hard. So here we are again:
Recently bought the 4K Super Mario Bros Movie Steelbook. Not the biggest fan of the movie but it's a piece of Nintendo History and the Steelbook really does look nice although a bit plain, the disks are just the standard super boring Blue with the move title written on, hate it when they don't do anything special with the actual disks and is just your standard slab of color with the title. The US disks look pretty cool though if you want to import.
Compared the 1080p and the 4K bluray and the 4K really is a bit of a lackluster transfer, the only redeeming feature is the HDR & Dolby Vision which does really pop since it's animation, the ATMOS track is very subdued and lacks punch and really found no height channels there. A puzzling thing was the use of grain in the film and made the picture look more soft than it needed and I guess that is why the 4K also does not really look better than the 1080p version. But I have checked and it seems the movie was mastered in 2k and then upscaled to 4K, which might explain the grain, etc.
All in all the 4K for this movie is not worth it if you find the 1080p bluray for cheap and want the movie.

All in all I'm disappointed with this 4K. One of the worst 4K's I have.

For myself, resolution is not nearly as impactful a difference as a good HDR implementation (EDIT: and to be fair, it's the resolution as presented in cinemas).
What is your criteria for a good Ultra HD BD, what is it you look for?

Ja, we had planned to go to Japan for our 20th wedding anniversary this year, but my wife was asked to visit Mexico and the US, so instead I'm flying to LA to meet up with her and we're going to do Hollywood and surrounds. I usually take these things in my stride, but being such a film fan, I have to confess to being quite excited!
I'm just going to have to watch myself and not butt in while the tour guide's doing their thing. I already struggled to keep my mouth shut regarding acoustical features when we toured Harpa earlier this year.

“Progress” is an interesting word.
So in some ways yes and in others no.
I figured out that I’m terrible at soldering, particularly de-soldering.
Opening the controller is super easy, so the first part went very smoothly. Getting the stick modules off the board was a nightmare. I really made a horrible mess of that part and if I did it again now it would go much much better.
But that’s why practice is important. Anyway I eventually got both modules off the board and installed the new ones, again the soldering work was amateur hour.
However, the sticks did work and I was able to calibrate them to the center and they feel good. No chance of drift after that. So a win.
But… the dpad down button is constantly engaged now
and L3 doesn’t register. So I’ve clearly done some damage to the board somewhere. On the major plus side; I’m super interested in this stuff now. I want to get this going as a real hobby so I’ve been watching tons of YouTube videos about boards, components and soldering techniques.
